Helen Schruder - Watermarks

I am a painter who constantly seeks the artist within.

Born and raised in Pembroke, Ontario, I have always felt a need to express myself, starting at a young age with murals on my bedroom walls. I still treasure hundreds of early “masterpieces” done on scraps of paper.

I have always had a home studio and gallery, and only exhibit my work in public collectively with other artists when the opportunity arises. Over the years my paintings have found homes across Canada, and in Germany, France, Costa Rica and England.

In 2003 I was approached by the Pembroke Regional Hospital Auxiliary to paint an 8x20 foot mural depicting the history and merger of the community hospitals. With approximately 5 months of volunteer effort, I completed a large oil painting for limited-edition prints and completed the full-size mural on a prominent hospital wall.

I have worked as an Executive Director for the Valley Arts council and have run my own businesses unrelated to the arts. But all the time, I continued to find a little time to paint. I am presently very involved in genealogical research and have integrated illustrative artwork in scrap books of photos depicting the first 25 years of my three sons’ lives.

My grandson has outgrown my original bedroom mural of an underwater scene and I have since replaced it with scene from a life-size hockey locker. Through commissions, I have competed two other children’s murals, and with volunteer hours, I have turned bare walls and pillars at a senior’s residence into interesting memories from their past.

My husband and I enjoy the tranquility of our home on the Ottawa River, in Pembroke, Ontario. We love to travel and I continually draw inspiration from these adventures.

Photos of my murals and other creations can be found on my gallery link.
